High in Bogota!

Main incentive for Katie and Matthew waking up early today was the Hilton Buffet Breakfast!
Both managed a good sleep after the hectic day travelling and were ready for a big breakfast. We then took a taxi into the historic centre of Bogota. A really nice area with plenty of churches, museums - and a large screen in the main square showing the Brazil v Portugal match. We visited the Gold Museum - a beautiful place - but there are only so many gold figures anyone can take.. - even after a couple of shots of finest Colombian coffee!

Very few tourists around but a surprisingly relaxed central area - not so sure about where the majority of the 7.5m population live - doubt it's quite as pleasant! Were pleased to be able to take Katie and Matthew for a famous South American cheap lunch - topped off by an amazing cappuccino - with the face of a bear (or is it a pig?)
After lunch and a further walk around the centre, it was on the cable car to a great viewpoint overlooking the city. Incredible to see the full extent of the city, the varying weather conditions, - and it gave Katie a chance to pretend to be a traveller!

After getting back to the hotel, we were delighted to see a 'Manager's Reception' in the bar - free cocktails (and they were strong ones) and nibbles. Katie in particular was in heaven!

Matthew on the coke in Colombia!
Not sure why the black and white photo but it looks good anyway

Matthew and his friend Paloma - they met on his Music Trip 3 years ago and have stayed in touch. A really lovely girl who is taking Katie and Matthew out tomorrow night to show them the smart places in town and to meet some 'real Colombians'.
Her family live close to the hotel - in the northern part of the city - definitely the place to be and where the local elite seem to base themselves.
One thing we forgot to mention about yesterday was when the taxi driver taking us to the airport to meet Katie and Matthew pulled into a 'gas station' but before filling up got another taxi driver to say to us in broken English "please get out of the car". We thought here we go, kidnapped within the first 4 hours of arrival. Turns out the taxi was gas powered and before filling up, all occupants of the car had to get out for safety reasons!
Planning tomorrow to take a couple of buses out the the Salt Mines and a Salt Cathedral built by the miners. Matthew has visited the place before and is keen for us to go - should be a good adventure!

  1. I bet you will have a job getting Katie to leave the hotel what with a Choc Fountain and free cocktails. Matt might sruggle to come back to the hotel if he meets up with those beautiful Columbian girls. You two could be on your own again. xxxxx
