Big Match in the desert

With Tina recovering for most of the day, it was a chance to explore the town and take a few pictures. Went to see the church in the morning and noticed a football trophy on display. Turns out that it was the day of the big match of the year - San Pedro against one of the professional teams from Santiago. If San Pedro won they could enter the Chilean version of the FA Cup (they lost 4-0).

Amazing atmosphere at the match - more people outside than in and an unreal backdrop of the mountains.

A cloudy end to the day but at night when it is clear, the stars are a real treat for stargazers - so good in fact that the US, EU and Japan are building the largest observatory in the world just down the road.

Tina is feeling better today but still tired and not exactly looking forward to the night bus tomorrow to the far north of Chile (Arica) where we connect (we hope) for the bus to La Paz in Bolivia.

Jeremy Clarkson described La Paz as not only the highest capital in the world but also the grottiest! Can't wait!

The hotel can kindly be described as quirky but they have been very sweet to Tina - that has made up for the swimming pool constuction next to our room, the barking dogs, the faulty heating and lighting and the party in the hostel next door last night (am sure I heard a trumpet being played!)

  1. Funny how it always come back to football when Ian's around!! Are you intending to see all the matches out there to make up for missing out on the World Cup here? Glad you enjoyed the match though. By the way Chelsea won the FA cup 1-0. Shame, as I was hoping Portsmouth might have gone out in a blaze of glory... Give Tina a hug from me and hopes she feels better soon. Sxx
